Alternative Ways to Treat Fibroids

About 35% of the women in the United States suffer from fibroids. Uterine fibroids are benign tumors grown from the muscle cells of the uterus. As long as these tumors remain small, they show no symptoms and they are harmless. Philip Brooks MD, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology is of the opinion such fibroids are best left alone. But, when these tumors grow fast and become large, problems start appearing. Heavy periods, anemia, pelvic pain, miscarriage and even infertility can occur. The treatments available for this medical condition are described below.
1. Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is the removal of the womb. It was the only remedy available until recently. This can be resorted to if you do not intend to have children any more.
2. Myomectomy(new approache)
This is a surgery which removes only the tumors and keeps the uterus intact. Myomectomy involves two different minimally invasive techniques. This does not bar you from having pregnancy in future.
3. Myolysis(new approache)
This a procedure in which the tumor is needle burned or frozen. Then the tumor is shrunk and the blood supply to it is cut off. This procedure is minimally invasive and is used for smaller tumors. The negative side is that it may scar the uterine lining and interfere with future pregnancies.
4. Uterine artery embolization(new approache)
This is a procedure which chokes off tiny blood vessels that feed the tumor by injecting pellets. It is minimally invasive and results in faster recovery. There is limited success in preserving fertility.
5. Drug therapy(new approache)
Hormone therapy is used by some doctors to shrink the tumors. It gives temporary relief for heavy periods.
6. Herbal Supplements(new approache)
