Prescription drugs like Clomid, Gonadotropins, and Bromocriptine are used as initial treatment for infertility. Clomifene is used on infertile women to help the pituitary gland stimulate the production of eggs in the ovaries. The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain. The common brand names are Clomiphene, Clomid, Serophene and Milophene.
The body produces two types of gonadotropins, follicle-simulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These hormones are produced by the pituitary gland and they stimulate production of other sex hormones. Gonadotropins help produce both eggs and sperms. So this drug is used for treatment of infertility in both men and women. This medicine is administered as injection. Common brand names are Pergonal, Humegon, Repronex, Metrodin, Fertinex, Follisim, Gonal F and Preganyl.
Bromocriptine, coming in capsule and tablet forms, is prescribed for women in whom no menstrual period occurs or having abnormal discharge of milk from breast. The common brand is Parlodel
These medicines are found to be very effective and they are successfully used for over 30 years. However,there are severe side effects and chances of multiple pregnancies. For clomifene, about one in ten women and for gonadotropins one in three women has multiple pregnancies. You have to decide whether you want to take the risk to have a child.
