I was too infertile to have kids
It is absolutely true that endometriosis could be quite a devastating condition. It is a very painful experience that has haunted many women for years together. Take the case of 32-year old Lynn Witwer who did not discover till the age of 25 that the extreme condition she had been suffering with was actually a medical condition affecting millions of women across the world. What most doctors had written off as constipation, ulcer and even her own psychological problems was actually a serious medical problem that even affected her chances of becoming a mother. It was a relief for her to discover that the problems she was facing could be solved with surgery. Yet it broke her heart to know that endometriosis would negatively hamper her chances of ever becoming a mother.
Right from the age of 12, Lynn Witwer had suffered unbearable pain and her menstrual cycles were so heavy that she would bleed right through her clothes. This prevented her from adopting a normal life and most of the days she would avoid going out of her house. However, once she found out that she was suffering from endometriosis, she found the answer to her grief episodes. She got in touch with the Endometriosis Association and got a complete idea about the health condition affecting her. She came to know that endometriosis was a leading cause of infertility since it inhibited ovulation and also blocked the fallopian tubes as well.
Under endometriosis, the tissue lining up the uterus starts to grow outside of the organ, onto other organs like the bladder and ovaries as well. Each month with the changes in the hormone levels, the tissue inflates and then breaks down. The resulting blood loss gets trapped inside the organ until the next menstrual cycle is due and this leads to a lot of pain resulting from internal bleeding and inflammation. In turn, this will cause blood clots and formation of adhesions and scar tissues. The entire episode of pain is quite baffling and this is exactly what Lynn Witwer had to suffer for years together. The cause of this condition is yet unknown.
Lynn then underwent two surgeries to remove the adhesions formed over all her organs. She knew all the while that she might have trouble having kids yet it was a disaster for her when the doctors gave no hope to her of ever being able to conceive ever in her lifetime. Witwer and her husband Michael decided not to go in for fertility treatments and adopt after a year down the road. She even decided to go in for a third surgery and make a final attempt at pregnancy before she took the final decision to adopt. However, miracles do happen and this is exactly what came true for Lynn Witwer.
Though her doctors had assured that no technology performed on her could make her pregnant, this proved quite false in her case. Much against the predictions of doctors, Lynn Witwer skipped her period and a home pregnancy test came out positive. Today she is the proud mother of a healthy 2-year-old son Ethan. It came as a shock to the entire family and even her doctors were left astound. Today she knows that in spite of having unhealthy organs, she could conceive successfully after the adhesions were removed. Now she is pregnant with her second baby as well and today an active member of endometriosis support group in her area. Her pregnancy period was quite a difficult one with extreme vomiting and regular bouts of dehydrations and turning anemic. Yet at the end of the day, she is pretty happy and shining with the love of her life – her two year old son Ethan.
